Children and young people who experience intimate partner violence are not simply passive witnesses. Violence can shape their sense of safety, relationships, development, behaviour, and well-being in complex and varied ways. In this webinar, Dr. Angelique Jenney will explore how children and young people understand and respond to intimate partner violence, the factors that can increase risk or support resilience, and the importance of recognising their experiences without defining them solely through trauma. Participants will be introduced to trauma-informed, developmentally responsive, and strengths-based approaches that can support young people’s safety, recovery, and meaningful participation in decisions affecting their lives.
About the Speaker
Dr. Angelique Jenney, MSW, RSW, PhD, is a Professor in the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Calgary and holds the Wood’s Homes Research Chair in Children’s Mental Health. With more than 25 years of experience in the gender-based violence, child protection, and children’s mental health sectors, Dr. Jenney’s research and practice focus on understanding and responding to the experiences of children and young people affected by violence and adversity. Her work emphasizes trauma-informed, strengths-based approaches to supporting young people and families, as well as the use of innovative simulation-based learning methods to strengthen professional education and practice.
