The AVA Webinar Series and RESOLVE Alberta present:

Responding to Disclosures of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in Newcomers and Refugees Communities

Featuring Dr. Souheir Jamil from the University of Calgary Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Prevention and Support

November 15th, 2024

12:00 – 1:30 PM MST / 2:00 – 3:30 PM EST

About the webinar:

Newcomers and refugees face numerous challenges as they adapt to their new environment. In addition to the stress of displacement, a history of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) can make them particularly vulnerable, often discouraging survivors and victims from seeking help. This webinar aims to help you understand the challenges and provide you with the tools to respond to disclosures within these communities.

Souheir Jamil (She, Her), PhD, is a specialist in sexual violence, an experienced curriculum developer, and a trainer who delivers impactful psychoeducation programs on sexual violence, trauma recovery, and cultural sensitivity with a post-secondary education background as a Professor at Lebanese University. Souheir is a trilingual psychotherapist with an international practice. Her approach is rooted in a deep understanding of the complex effects of trauma with compassion, cultural humility, and profound respect for each individual’s unique experiences and resilience. She also spent 13 years working in the non-profit sector in Calgary, helping newcomers and refugee students and their families overcome settlement. challenges. Currently, Souheir is the Community Resource and Training Coordinator with the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Prevention and Response office at the University of Calgary.
